The events of ONE PIECE 1037 have left some questions for readers of the Devil Fruit series, specifically their names. The nomenclature of this special food from the ONE PIECE world has always been controversial.
How do you know the name of a devil fruit?? It used to be thought that whoever eats it would automatically get the answer, but in reality this is not the case. The answer comes from Eiichiro Oda in an old SBS.
The mangaka explains that There is a Devil Fruit Handbook, or at least of all those known to represent both the name and its power, which among other things will be discussed at length in the story in due course. Therefore, after eating one of these rare fruits, you will have to discover its powers and only then you will have to look for the exact equivalent in the manual to know what you are talking about.
We also know from the series that some or all guides also carry images of some devil fruit to make them instantly recognizable. Oda reports using the example of Luffy’s gom-gom fruit, the image of which is known the same is not true for the fruits of Kalifa and Kaku, who then ate it blindly.
Who knows if even Blackbeard already knew the appearance of the Dark Dark Fruit from that particular guide or if his knowledge was passed on in some other way.
