Before Hirohiko Araki switched to Ultra Jump magazine, she published the first six parts of Jojo’s bizarre adventure on the pages of Weekly Shonen Jump, a famous exponent of Japanese manga publishing who, as the name suggests, presents content aimed primarily at male and young audiences.
During the Original phase of the production of Stone Ocean, the sixth part of the long history of the Joestar family, Araki had already thought of wanting to change a central element compared to the previous parts by inserting a female protagonist for the first time. Jolyne Kujo is still one of the most popular yo-yos to this day from the community, but as reported on the @DailyJojoFacts and @jojo_wiki pages in the posts at the bottom of the page, her story could have been very different if Araki had followed her editor’s advice.
“I kindly asked him to draft a male lead, however he refused within three seconds. WSJ readers wouldn’t accept a protagonist, which is why I wanted him to change it, but he just replied, “that’s why we’re doing this”. With these words, Hideto Azuma sums up the anecdote an interview reported in Jojoveller, Collection of art books and behind the scenes dedicated to the work. What do you think about it? Would you have wished for another male lead instead of Jolyne? Let us know what you think of this in the comments section.
To conclude, we’d like to remind you that some fans have made a great crossover between Jojo and Studio Ghibli, and leave the exciting trailer of the anime Stone Ocean to be released on Netflix in December 2021.
Daily yo-yo fact N138:
In JOJOVELLER, Arakis then editor (Hideto Azuma) stated that he asked Jolyne to be male instead of female.
This is because the Weekly Shonen Jump is mostly for boys.
Araki liked the idea of a female lead, so he ignored the request. pic.twitter.com/aSZ210vnBE
