Hideaki Anno brought the story of Neon Genesis Evangelion to the world in the 1990s. Many Judeo-Christian references, an intimate and philosophical story with many said and other unspoken things that are left to the understanding of the viewer. After a difficult start, Evangelion is now one of the most famous brands and the Credit also goes to the Eva Units.

It goes without saying that Japan has a great passion for robots like Grendizer, Mazinger, Gundam and so on. Even the Eve from Neon Genesis Evangelion are loved and often bought like the mechas of the other most famous animes. But in the first TV series how many Eva units have appeared in total?

So let's go back to i 26 episodes of Neon Genesis Evangelion and the two films Death and Rebirth and The End of Evangelion to do the math. The main Eva units in the series are five, numbered 00 through 04:

  • The blue Eva-00 is driven by Rei Ayanami;
  • The Eva-01 Purple is the most iconic instead, led by protagonist Shinji Ikari;
  • The bright red Eva-02 comes from the volcanic Asuka Soryu Langley;
  • Then there is the brief appearance of the black Eva-03 unit, led by Toji Suzuhara;
  • Finally, the US white Eva-04 mentioned in the series.

These are the five large Eva units that appeared in Neon Genesis Evangelion. However, the count must also take into account the mass-produced units that appeared in The End of Evangelion. Originally twelve were planned, but only nine made it into series production. Consequently, A total of 14 Eva units appear in Neon Genesis Evangelion.
