The Japanese portal Anime! Anime! published a fragment of an interview with Hiroyuki, Manga writer Kanojo mo Kanojo (Girlfriend, girlfriend) where he commented on some aspects of the animated adaptation, particularly the costumes used. The excerpt comes from this year’s ninth issue of the magazine Megami magazine.
- Can you tell us why you decided to make “the main character, who is with two people” the center of the story in the first place?
- The main reason is that I was wondering what would happen if the main character took it really seriously. It’s a little inappropriate to say “seriously” (laughs), but I couldn’t imagine what kind of manga it would be, so I wanted to give it a try.
- And what did you think of the story until then?
- Which made me realize how difficult it was when I introduced the third heroine to Rika. When Naoya realized how difficult it was to continue a two-way relationship, she found it impossible to enter into a three-way relationship just because a new girl showed up who said she liked him. So when I was thinking about how Naoya should treat Rika, I couldn’t find an answer, and this had worried me until recently. I feel like I’m finally getting a breakthrough (laughs). But this “difficulty” also makes drawing interesting. I also enjoy drawing the subtle interaction between girls that only a love triangle can provide.
- I heard that Rika’s appearance was also decided very early on.
- That’s the way it is. I wanted to post it from the start. I looked back at the notes I had written before the show and it said “camp girl” (laughs). Rika’s idea arose from the thought that “a girl camping in a tent in the garden would be interesting”. The overconfidence part and the streamer personality were also written in my first notes.
- (Skip a question) Is there anything you requested from the animation staff or, on the contrary, asked for confirmation?
- My manga has been full of comedies so far so I figured if I did it in the same direction the public might consider it “one more comedy up” so I told them I didn’t want it to look too much that, it’s more of a romantic comedy. One of the questions the staff asked me was about the pattern of the heroines’ panties (laughs). “What pattern would you like for Sakis and Nagisa’s panties?” You told me and I replied, “Well … you decide” (laughs).
- How did you feel when you saw the character designs for the animated version?
- When I first saw it, I thought it was very good. It’s the kind of design I had in mind when thinking about how I wanted to draw it, and Akiko Toyoda was able to take and sculpt whatever ideal shape I had on my mind. At first I was impressed with the artist’s technical skills, and then he reproduced my design to perfection, so on that note, my honest impression is that they even improved it.
Summary of Kanojo mo Kanojo
After Naoya Mukai had an unrequited love for several years, she finally gets a date with her childhood friend Saki Saki. However, when he tries to get involved in this relationship, he receives an abrupt confession from Nagisa Minase.
Naoya tries to reject her at first, but is soon overwhelmed by the feeling of not wanting to hurt her. In order not to abuse his girlfriend’s trust, Naoya comes up with a “solution” to make both happy: going out with both of them. Of course, Saki rejects the idea, but through Naoya and Nagisa’s persistence, she eventually accepts. This begins a three-headed romance between Naoya, his girlfriend, and his other girlfriend, who have had a relationship that deviates from the social norm from the start.
