The Japanese portal Anime! Anime! released a fragment of the interview with the anime’s second season production team Gotoubun no Hanayome ((The fundamental quintuplets), especially with the director Kaori Fujita and the producer Mitsutoshi Ogura. The interview was in this year’s fifth edition of Megami Magazine.
- In the second season of Gotobuun no Hanayome, the contents of the fifth to tenth volumes of the original manga were summarized in twelve episodes. What did you think while creating the episodes?
- Ogura:: The school trip featured in the tenth volume of the original manga was seen as vital to the production as it represents a significant advance in the relationships between the quintuplets and Fuutarou, as well as each other. Due to various meetings, we decided that this should be included in the second season. The production of animation can never take for granted that there will be a sequel. Because of this, I’ve decided that I want to close this second season. This is a crucial moment, you know, producer stuff.
- Kaori: As long as there is a limit of twelve episodes of 30 minutes each, it is imperative to cut the content from the original manga. When we were creating the episodes, I knew that I had to offer the viewer a story that showed the development of the characters in an easy-to-understand way. For example, when Yotsuba rocks on the swing and Fuutarou confesses what she really wants. This is part of the fifth volume of the original manga. So if we’d followed the same rhythm we should have included it in the first half of season two, but we recorded it through episode 10. We chose this thought that the viewer would understand the emotions of Yotsuba, especially those who have only seen the anime. Therefore, it was decided to add this scene to the series later.
- Ogura: Yotsuba has always felt guilty that all the quintuplets switched schools. After the viewer had been informed about all this background, it was decided from the production that it would be better to show this moment between Yotsuba and Fuutarou after and not before.
- Kaori: When it was announced in the 10th episode that the school trip would take place in groups of five, Yotsuba offers that all quintuplets and Fuutarou form a group and leave them out. At that moment, she also remembers Fuutarou’s smile on her previous date on the swings. In order for the viewer who is not following the manga to understand this better, the scene has been moved to the same episode.
- Ogura: Recombining these stories is a method to improve the perfection of the entire animation. After talking about it with Negi Haruba-sensei, the author of Gotoubun no Hanayome, and making all these changes by mutual agreement, the level of perfection of the anime was increased.
Gotoubun no Hanayome Season 2 Synopsis
With the careful guidance of their teacher Fuutarou Uesugi, the academic performance of the nakano quintuplets shows signs of improvement, although their path to graduation remains difficult. However, as they continue to create various situations that delay actual tutoring, Fuutarou becomes more and more involved in their personal life, which further complicates their relationships with one another.
At another point, Fuutarou is slowly beginning to see the existence of a possible link between himself and the past that he believes he shared with one of the five girls. Will the feelings of everyone who begins to develop and overlap be able to maintain their strict bond with that of a teacher and their students, or will they mature into something entirely different?
