Animated franchise on the official Twitter account for the studio Kyoto animation, Free! – Iwatobi Swim ClubIt has been announced that April 26th will mark the eighth anniversary of the franchise’s official announcement. Apparently the franchise was preparing a celebration as it made the reminder seven days in advance.

The franchise is based on a series of light novels by Kouji Oujiwho received an honorable mention in the second Kyoto Animation AwardThe first season of twelve episodes premiered in July 2013, followed by a second season of thirteen episodes in July 2014 and a third season of twelve episodes in July 2018.

The next film in the franchise should be released in 2020 parallel to the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. However, the COVID-19 pandemic delayed both events, and the film is now slated for this year.

Synopsis of Free!

Haruka Nanase loves water and is passionate about swimming. He competed in elementary school and won a relay race with his three friends Rin Matsuoka, Nagisa Hazuki and Makoto Tachibana. After winning the tournament, the four friends went their separate ways. Years later they meet again as students; However, Rin didn’t care if he was the same as before. Not only does he go to another school, the only thing that matters to him is to prove that he is a better swimmer than Haruka.

After the bitter reunion, Haruka, Nagisa and Makoto decide to found the swimming club at Iwatobi High School. However, you will need a fourth member if you want to take part in the next tournament. Enter Rei Ryuugazaki, a former member of the track team that recruits Nagisa. As the time for competition approaches, the four develop a close bond as they train intensively to emerge victorious and settle things between Haruka and Rin once and for all.
