A few days after the auction that saw the first-ever Marvel comic sell for $2.4 million, auction house Heritage Auction has announced the sale of another historic book for a record price: a mint condition copy of Captain America Comics #1originally published in 1941, sold for $3.1 million.
Captain America Comics #1 made the history of American comics, not only as the birthplace of a character who’s still rocking the wave today, but also because of his famous cover, which he saw published in the middle of World War II the Sentinel of Liberty punched Hitler in the face.
“Every time I looked up during the comics portion of the session, I saw a new record being broken, and the trend continued as we moved to the books.“explained Barry Sandoval, Vice President of Heritage Auctions.”We knew we had a truly exceptional selection of material, and we’re glad these viewers felt the same way“.
The copy of Captain America Comics #1 sold was rated 9.4 by the Certified Guarantee Company, which certifies it as a copy in practically perfect condition. It was also sold during the same auction a copy of Fantastic Four #1 from 1961 to $1.5 million, in addition to some original plates from Tales of Suspense #59made by Jack Kirby, which grossed $975,600 overall.
Despite the impressive auction figures, the record set by the comic book last year with the first appearance of Spider-Man remains unbeaten: a copy of Amazing Fantasy 15 actually sold for $3.62 million.
