Good, indeed excellent news for Makoto Shinkai and his team, since apparently his two most profitable works, Your Name is Weathering With You, would recently return to dominate the Japanese box office, recording revenue for more than a billion yen between paying viewers and selling new home video editions.

The two feature films have recently returned to the cinema because of the inconvenience caused by Coronavirus pandemic, which apparently would have forced the upper floors to postpone the distribution of dozens of new films. The first place at the box office is currently occupied by Shinrei Kissa Extra no Himitsu: The Real Exorcist, one of the two new films shown in May, while Weathering With You and Your Name placed respectively in second and eighth place.

Weathering With You is now the seventh most profitable Japanese film at home, behind The enchanted city, Your Name, Howl's Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke, Bayside Shakedown 2 is Ponyo. The film is also in the Top 5 of the most profitable anime films in history (considering the global takings). In addition, a few days ago it was revealed that the home video edition of the film placed 138,357 copies, of which 59,136 standard, 40,364 Collector's and 38,857 DVDs, for a total greater than 4.5 million euros.

Your Name remains firmly in first place in the ranking of the most profitable souls in history with a total of more than 360 million dollars (323 million euros), as well as the most successful animated product in Japan after The Enchanted City.

And what do you think of it? Are you happy with the success of the two films? Let us know with a comment! In case you didn't, don't miss the chance to take a look at our review of Weathering With You.
