A leak of the next issue of the magazine Weekly shōnen jump confirmed production of an anime adaptation of the manga, written and illustrated by Yuusei Matsui, The elusive samurai (Nige Jouzu no Wakagimi). Although there is no official announcement, the information is confirmed by the cover of the magazine in question, which also confirms this production is handled by CloverWorks Studios.

The official information will be announced on March 25th during the event AnimeJapan 2023, which will also unveil a special promotional video (may not have animation produced yet) and more information about the production team. On the other hand, the domain registration was also leaked (https://nigekawa.run/), which in turn confirms the production.

The elusive samurai

Yuusei Matsui started publishing the manga through the magazine Weekly shōnen jump from the publisher shueisha in January 2021. This was the author's first consecutive publication in a long period of five years after the completion of Ansatsu Kyoushitsu (Assassination Classroom) other of his world-famous works, which were also adapted into anime almost a decade ago.

production team

  • Yuuta Yamazaki (Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo Suru, Yuru Camp, Wonder Egg Priority) is responsible for directing the anime at the studios CloverWorks.
  • yasushi nishiya (Chikyuugai Shounen Shoujo, Pocket Monsters: Coco, Summer Time Render) is responsible for character design and animation direction.

Synopsis for The Elusive Samurai

Eight-year-old Tokiyuki Houjou, the next heir to the Kamakura shogunate, is a boy with no talent for more than hide-and-seek. One day, their carefree life is turned upside down when Takauji Ashikaga brutally usurps the power of the Kamakura and ends their reign. Saved by a self-proclaimed prophetic priest, Tokiyuki manages to escape with his life. Now he must avoid those trying to kill him while recruiting comrades who can help restore the Kamakura Shogunate to its former glory.
