It seems like a few weeks have passed since the debut of Sing Yesterday for Me, the anime of Kobo stave broadcast from last April 4 and now on the home straight. The series was mainly appreciated because of the impressive level of care in the artistic sector and a few moments ago, the director of the department spoke to the microphones of Crunchyroll.
Specifically, the site reported the first part of a short interview with Fujii Yuta is Use me Tetsuyarespectively backgroud artist and artistic director of the anime. You can read the complete chat by clicking on the link available at the bottom.
Initially the two spoke about the challenges encountered while playing a Tokyo from the early 2000s, declaring: “The story develops mainly near the Sategaya line to the west of Tokyo, between 2000 and 2001. As regards the locations, we relied on people who lived in that area of ββthe city, in order to have a guideline to follow to make the setting realistic. The director asked us to give a sense of “old” to all objects, from traffic lights and LEDs, passing through signs etc.. We also worked a lot on the interiors of the buildings. Often the manager asked to expand certain areas or to recreate existing buildings. We tried to make sure that everything gave a sense of realism“.
The peculiarity of the anime, however, lies in the balance between realism and fantasy: “The first draft was practically a photograph of the city. We thought we had gone a little too far with realism and we didn’t want to lose the feeling of the manga, so we decided to balance the parts by working directly on the storyboards. We started to say to each other “Okay, maybe it’s time to touch up this scene, while here we should add more color”. We simply persevered until we were satisfied. With Sing “Yesterday” for Me we are really committed. Many studios can count on 4 or 5 people for the art department, while we were even 15. Being able to count on such a large group made the difference“.
