The platform Crunchyroll announced that it is working with Adult swim to produce an anime adaptation of the video game franchise by Yu Suzuki, Shenmue.

The statement did not reveal a premiere date, but it has been confirmed that the series will have a total of thirteen episodes and will be broadcast worldwide by the platform.

Sega released the franchise’s first video game for the console Dream cast 1999 in Japan and 2000 in North America. Subsequently, a sequel for the same console was released in Japan in 2000 and in North America in 2001.

Production team

  • Chikara Sakurai ((One Punch Man II, Magimoji Ruromo, Lost song) is responsible for directing the anime in the studios Telecommunication animation film.
  • Sola entertainment Production management is credited.
  • The director of the video game franchise, Yu Suzuki, is acting as executive producer on the project.

Shenmue synopsis

1986, Yokosuka, Japan. Teenage martial artist Ryo Hazuki returns to his family’s dojo to witness a confrontation between his father Iwao and a Chinese man named Lan Di. Lan Di easily incapacitates Ryo and threatens to kill him unless Iwao gives him a mysterious stone artifact known as the “dragon’s mirror”. Iwao confesses that the object is buried outside in the cherry tree, and when his men retrieve the mirror, Lan Di Iwao deals a fatal blow, who later dies in Ryo’s arms. So begins a story of vengeance.
