Netflix has disclosed exciting information about its upcoming original anime, “Terminator Zero” created in partnership with Skydance Animation and Production IG. This highly anticipated series is set to debut globally on August 29.

The official announcement confirms that “Terminator Zero” will consist of eight episodes, introducing fresh characters while remaining within the “Terminator” universe. Although the series was initially revealed in 2021, significant details are now being shared for the first time.

Background and Legacy

In 2008, the rights holders of the “Terminator” franchise aimed to produce a series of shorts by notable European and Japanese creators. This project, dubbed “Termination” was intended to explore Judgment Day, a pivotal event in the “Terminator” narrative where Skynet initiates a nuclear apocalypse. The T-800, a time-traveling Skynet weapon, has alternated between antagonist and protagonist roles since the original 1984 film.

Interestingly, the T-800 made an official cameo in the anime series “Doraemon” in June 2009, marking a unique crossover between American and Japanese robots. The encounter was widely covered in the Japanese press.

Production Team

  • Mattson Tomlin (Project Power, The Batman II) serves as showrunner, executive producer, and head writer.
  • David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger of Skydance Animation are overseeing the project along with Masashi Kudo at Production IG.
