Seven of the most important Japanese authors in circulation have given their opinion on My Hero Academia, on the occasion of the start of the art exhibition My Hero Academia: Drawing Smash. Among the mangaka, Eiichiro Oda (ONE PIECE) and Masashi Kishimoto (Naruto) stand out, but there is no shortage of new talents like Gege Akutami (Jujutsu Kaisen) and Yuki Tabata (Black Clover).
The seven mangakas in question wrote a few lines of commentary on My Hero Academia and its author Kohei Horikoshi and, at Shueisha’s request, made one or more sketches to promote the colossal art exhibition. The event has already proven to be a successand luckily the Twitter users Audrey published a translation of the authors’ “Reviews” online.
- Eiichiro Oda (ONE PIECE)
If you try to draw a character from My Hero Academia, you’ll realize how elaborate the Chaarcter design is. I always think the best solution would be to draw them in combat as they would have less detail. This is one of the reasons I respect Kohei Horikoshi, he likes to draw them that way and they look so strong that it is like they can have an impact on the reader! This is one of the reasons why the manga managed to win the hearts of fans! Congratulations on your first exhibition!
- Tite Kubo (bleach)
If heroes really existed, how would society see them? Horikoshi is great at making his characters’ great style coexist with a fine sense of underlying realism and these two things combined with the theme of the story are the reasons why My Hero Academia is so amazing! Congratulations on the exhibition!
- Masashi Kishimoto (Naruto)
Horikoshi’s art is simple, but he is very good at drawing, and his talent increases the artistic value of the manga. His style is so rich that I think it takes him a very long time to draw. I have great respect for his art because I believe it allows the characters to express a wide range of emotions that he can always effectively portray from different angles. For me, an artist who can draw hands and eyes well is already very capable in himself, but Horikoshi is on a higher level, he is so good that it makes me jealous!
- Daisuke Ashihara (World trigger)
Before I started working on World Trigger, I had the opportunity to meet Kohei Horikoshi in person. I remember he showed me one of his drawings and I thought, “Wow, I’ll never reach that level!”. According to some, this drawing surprised me so much that I gave up drawing by hand and switched to digital, but they’re just rumors.
It has been ten years since that day and I still don’t know if I will ever reach the same level as Horikoshi. In all cases I managed to make a sketch for his art exhibition. If nothing else, I think this is evidence of my growth as an artist. Drawing the characters from My Hero Academia is a lot of fun, I recommend everyone to give it a try! Ah, and by the way, congratulations on the art exhibition!
- Yasuki Tanaka (Daylight saving time rendering)
Horipi (please let me call you for life), congratulations on the art exhibition! I remember that when you worked on it for me, you always drew during the breaks! My first impression was “Ok, this is a genius”. Oh one more thing, Horipi, you left a few sketches in my office and I wanted to tell you that I never threw them away. I keep them like they are sweetheart. Maybe I’ll show them at your next art exhibition! Keep up the good work and remember that I will always be cheering you on!
- Yuki Tabata (black clover)
Horikoshi-sensei eh … if I remember correctly when Horipi and I first met, it was a mutual acquaintance. At that time I had heard of him before, and I remember him helping me get a one-shot on Shonen Jump. I also remember he was much younger, but his drawings were already better than mine. Today we both write for Jump, but his drawings continue to scare me.
During the serialization, I remember we lived in two apartments nearby, so one day we made arrangements to have something to eat together. Unfortunately we were both full of commitments and in the end we didn’t make it. It was difficult to keep up with Jump’s needs at the time, but it was a challenge we overcame together.
Horipi even called me on the day my wife was born. He is an extraordinary person, so I would like to wholeheartedly congratulate him on his first art exhibition!
- Gege Akutami (Jujutsu Kaisen)
I belong to that group of writers who would like to be worshiped by Horikoshi. I and many other young writers fight each other every week and say, “No, I’m the Kouhai from Horikoshi!”. Maybe we should try to get along. But at least I can talk to him! Congratulations on the exhibition, Sensei!
