The NHK newspaper reported that the Japanese government will decide on Thursday revoke the state of emergency in advance in over 30 prefectures in the country. However, even if this should happen, Tokyo and several other prefectures should still maintain the current order.
The prime minister Shinzo Abe said that in the coming days he will consult with a group of experts, including economists, before choosing the next arrangements. We recall that Abe declared a state of emergency in Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama, Chiba, Osaka, Hyogo, and Fukuoka from April 7 to May 6.
The Kyoto governor, Takatoshi Nishiwaki, had specifically asked to extend the ordinance to Kyoto as well. A similar request had also been made by the governor of Aichi, Hideaki Omura, who later independently declared the state of emergency on April 17th.
Hokkaido, however, revoked the order on March 19th, to then reconfirm it on April 12th. Last week, the Japanese government extended the state of emergency beyond the deadline - set for May 6 - extending it until the 31st of the month.
Last Monday, Japan officially reported 15,798 virus cases (including 712 cases of the Diamond Princess cruise ship), with 621 deaths.
