The departure from the village of Foosha led Luffy to go see lots of places and meet lots of people. We have seen that ONE PIECE has over 1000 characters, or those that the mangaka has at least given a name. But obviously the number of people who inhabit this world is actually several orders of magnitude higher.
Fountain, how many people live in the world of ONE PIECE? Eiichiro Oda never gave a straight answer or gave numbers for almost all known islands. Hence, we know very little on this front, but let’s start with what little data we have to hypothesize an estimate. Let’s start with a minimum: there is one user of the Conqueror King’s Haki for every million inhabitants, so it should be there at least 15 million people in the world of ONE PIECE. However, this number is very low, especially due to two islands.
We know that Sandy, the island that houses the Kingdom of Alabasta and its capital, Alubarna, has a total of 10 million people. The island of the fish people, on the other hand, has six million inhabitants. In total, these two islands alone already have at least 16 million inhabitants. Other islands have no specific reference, but we do know that many islands in the world of ONE PIECE are uninhabited and others have around a thousand inhabitants and are therefore practically zero for the purposes of counting.
We also know that there are 62 islands on the Grand Line on Paradise Route that follow the routes of the Log Pose, including the Island of the Fish People and the Sabaody Archipelago. From what we’ve seen, the population of Alubarna and the Island of the Fish People is not high, and if you take into account all the uninhabited islands, you can get an average of three million people per island. Because of this, we would have about 186 million people on the way to heaven, maybe even 200 if we add the numerous unknown islands off the beaten path.
Knowing that this only covers half of the Grand Line, we can double that number for the New World, which for now appears to be of similar density. That brings us to 400 million inhabitants. From here it gets even harder to gauge as the four seas – North Blue, East Blue, West Blue, and South Blue – are much larger and therefore have many more islands and more people. If we were to minimize humans already and suspect 200 million at a time, we would become one a total of 1.2 billion people in the world of ONE PIECE.
A much higher number than in the real Great Age of Piracy, where the number of people fluctuated between 700 and 800 million.
