Yoshikazu Beniya is a well known face in the animation industry, having worked as a producer on some well-known titles of the caliber of fairy tale, Medaka Box or the latest Komi cannot communicate on Netflix. The producer therefore took part in an interview on the current state of the anime.
Beniya was one of the protagonists of last season in the recent success of Takt Op. Destiny, the anime in collaboration between the Madhouse Studio and MAP. Akiba Souken invited the producer for an interview about his career and the current situation in the animation industry. This last point has achieved a certain level of awareness on the internet and an excerpt from his words follows:
“Animation projects are no longer aimed at a Japanese audience. TV networks are also involved in the business so it’s not difficult to understand, but I think it’s best to be more careful about what users want to see in new animation projects. In the past, the success of an anime was based on the sale of physical packages, so the Japanese fans had the power to decide. But today, success is measured by which distribution platform buys the rights to the series and whether the streaming was successful outside of Japan. However, I would like to see again that the Japanese have the most decision-making power.“
Then he added: “The other thing that interests me is “labor reform”. In the animation production industry there are many people who work individually with their own sense of responsibility, so if you are limited to “only XX hours a day” or “no more than XX overtime”, then you can’t do anything like “I want to finish this” or “I want to be ready by this hour”. It is very important to protect the work system and the health of the animators, but I don’t think the current measures are necessarily what you want them to be.“
As for you, what do you think of his words instead, what do you think of the animation industry’s greater attention to the foreign market? Let us know what you think about this with a comment below.
