In the early 1900s, in Hokkaido after the Russo-Japanese War, Saichi Sugimoto tirelessly panned for gold. Nicknamed “Sugimoto the Immortal” for his defiance of death in combat, the former soldier seeks his fortune to fulfill a promise he made to his best friend before he was killed in combat: to provide for his family, especially for his widow who needs treatment abroad because of her poor eyesight. One day, a drunk classmate tells Sugimoto the story of a man who murdered a group of Ainu and stole a fortune in gold. He hid the gold somewhere in Hokkaido before being arrested by the police.

Sugimoto doesn’t think much of the story until he discovers the drunkard’s corpse with the same tattoos described in the story. But before he can gather his thoughts, a grizzly bear, the man’s cause of death, approaches Sugimoto, determined to finish his meal. He is rescued by a young Ainu girl named Asirpa, whose father turned out to be one of the Ainu killed. Using Asirpa’s hunting skills and Sugimoto’s survival instinct, the two agree to join forces and find the hidden treasure: one to reclaim the rightful village, and the other to fulfill his friend’s dying wish.
