There Series of fatesThe name of the anime series, which is based on the colossal Type Moon franchise, is considered a masterpiece by many. The Ufotable film trilogy has made record-breaking revenue, and the latest TV series features some of the best animation ever. A big thing, continues to scare new fans.

The main problem with the Fate series is that, like Kingdom Hearts or Metal Gear Solid in the game industry, The narrative structure of the work can sometimes be incomprehensible. Between Fate / Stay Night, Fate / Zero, Fate / Grand Order, and dozens of other customizations, it is easy to lose your head and fan base and many specialized sites It doesn't help to keep arguing about where to start. What's the best way to start the Fate series? Let's clear it up once and for all.

Just like a multiple choice video game, the Fate series features different paths and alternate endings, a mantra for any self-respecting visual novel. Because of this, the series tells three different versions of the same story called the "Route". The first route, told in the 2006 anime Fate / stay night, is unlocked through certain actions in the visual novel and tells the story of the protagonist Emiya Shirou and his love interest, the servant Saber. The second, adapted in the 2014 series Fate / Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Workfocuses more on the relationship between Emiya and her classmate Rin Tohsaka, while the third in the film trilogy is adapted Fate / night remain heavenly feelingtells the relationship between Emiya and her adoptive sister Matou Sakura.

What's the best way to see the series? The correct order is as follows:

  1. Fate / stay night (2006 Anime Series, Studio Deen): tells the first route and focuses on the relationship between the protagonist and Saber.
  2. Fate / Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Work (Anime series 2014/15, Studio Ufotable): tells the second route and focuses on the relationship between the protagonist and Rin Thosaka as well as the servant Archer.
  3. Fate / night remain heavenly feeling (Film trilogy 2017/20, Studio Ufotable): Consisting of three films, Presage Flower (2017), Lost Butterfly (2019) and Spring Song (2020), it tells the third and last route, the most mature of the three.
  4. Fate zero (2011/12 anime series, Studio Ufotable): Prequel takes place ten years before the events of Fate / Stay Night.

The first anime series, Fate / Stay Night 2006, was heavily criticized by the fan base for suffering from comparison with the later ones, particularly due to the poor quality of Studio Deen's animations. Given the narrative structure of the Fate series, Fate stay / night can safely be skippedand you can start watching right from Unlimited Blade Works. Alternatively, the best solution would be to play the original visual novel.

A second point that has been discussed many times concerns Fate / Zero. As a prologue to the main series, The anime can be seen first, but spoils some important Haven's Feel revelations. For this reason, it is best to watch it last or right after the second movie.

The third film from Fate Stay / Night: Heaven's Feel hit Japanese theaters a few months ago, while the other two are available on Netflix along with Zero, Unlimited Blade Works, and several spin-offs. The latter tell alternative timelines or side stories and are not strictly necessary for understanding the story.
