A few minutes ago came new updates on the first US weekend of Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, which apparently recorded the second-best Western debut for an anime film after Pokémon: The First Movie from 1999. The film grossed a whopping $ 21.1 million in three daysand even hit the launch of Mortal Kombat.
Demon Slayer: Mugen train closed on Friday, April 23rd via Mortal Kombat, $ 9.5 million versus $ 9 million live action from Warner Bros.. For the next two days, Mortal Kombat posted revenues of $ 8.6 (Saturday April 24) and $ 4.7 million (Sunday April 25), compared with $ 6.4 million and $ 3.5 million, respectively for Demon Slayer: Mugen Train. However, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train is shown in just 1600 screens against 3073 of the WB blockbusterSo the difference of three million is far from impressive.
Back to the Ufotable film Demon Slayer: Mugen Train In just three days, it became the fourth highest-rated anime film of all time in the United Statesunder Pokémon: The First Movie ($ 85.7 million), Pokémon: The Movie 2000 ($ 43.7 million), and Dragon Ball Super: Broly ($ 30.7 million). If that is the result after the first weekend, it is virtually certain that Demon Slayer: Mugen Train will be on the podium by the end of next week.
To give you a benchmark, My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising grossed $ 13.3 million in total in the US, while your name and Weathering With You grossed $ 5 and 7.8 million, respectively. The Enchanted City, Ghibli’s Oscar-winning animation masterpiece, had sales of 12.4 in two months. Demon Slayer literally destroyed those numbers in three daysThis is proving to be an extraordinary success outside of Japan as well. The film’s reviews are equally enthusiastic, and at this point it is almost certain that the film will be the first in history to hit half a billion dollars.
