Anime has now become a global cultural phenomenon. Starting with the Dragon Ball generation, there are more and more people who came into contact with this world in the 90s and have now grown up and become members of society at various levels, including political ones. And one of the latest news concerns them Brazilian politics.
Brazilian politician Kim Kataguiri has posted commercials for his election campaign on his YouTube channel. So far nothing unusual for the politician, who is facing the parliamentary elections in Brazil next Sunday. However, when watching the videos, it is immediately clear that Kim Kataguiri exploited an anime by creating a parody for her election campaign.
In one of the two videos you immediately notice the reference to Kaguya-sama: Love is War, especially the special ending of the first season with Chika Fujiwara as the protagonist. Along with a dancer dressed as Chika, Kim Kataguiri donned the Shuchiin Institute’s male uniform and danced to the melodies of the revised song, claiming to continue fighting corruption.
The other video uses the sheet music of the song Rolling Star instead, Yui’s opening note used in Bleach, and apparently checked by the politician and his team in a voting key. Here his face intersects with Ichigo’s as he launches into a Sosuke Aizen attack with Bolsonaro’s face. And would you vote for a politician who presents himself like this?
It’s certainly a different way of looking at anime in politics after what was said in the US about Goblin Slayer by a Republican.
