Sosuke Aizen was one of Bleach’s greatest enemies. As a former fifth division captain, he betrayed all of Gotei 13 and society to get his hands on the Hogyoku, the precious spiritual gem that Kyosuke Urahara has hidden in Rukia’s body. He was then the ultimate enemy of the manga’s first very long story arc.
Aizen then returned in the final stages of Bleach and reappeared due to Yhwach. However, he will manage to stay alive and stay in prison, as you can see after the time jump. At the end of Bleach Volume 74, Aizen was still alive. Still, a sentence by Szayelaporro Grantz in the new iteration of the franchise has sparked some doubts and speculation about the state of the Shinigami.
In fact, he explains how the balance between the worlds was broken. Thanks to the deaths of three powerful captains – Genryusai Yamamoto, Jushiro Ukitake and Retsu Unohana, for whom the rituals of Shinigami were performed – and the Disappearance of Aizen and Yhwach’s reiatsu, now hell is overflowing with strength and can therefore also open up on the other side.
This sentence about the disappearance of reiatsu is very ambiguous. We know that Yhwach died and that his reiatsu disappeared thanks in part to Kazui’s seemingly innocent gesture. But Aizen should still be alive in theory. That can mean or that Aizen was executed, and therefore dead, or that its limitations are so powerful that they completely undo and eliminate his reiatsu from existence.
It’s possible that Bleach will deepen this aspect with the next saga and maybe bring other old characters back into the game alongside Aizen.
