With the release of Shadow War: Alpha #1 in the United States, DC Comics’ new crossover with Batman has begun. The output showed the story’s triggering event: the assassination of one of the Dark Knight’s most famous and important adversaries with a blow to the head.
The victim is Ra’s al Ghul, a constant presence in Batman’s stories since its inception in the 1970s. In recent stories, the villain had embarked on a path of redemption by forming an emotional bond with his nephew, Damian Wayne, and promising to reveal to the world the mysteries of how the miraculous springs of Lazarus work.
The murder occurred during a Ra’s press conference in Washington. The identity of the sniper guilty of the crime is Deathstroke, who stars alongside Batman and Robin in the Shadow War crossover. To complete his work, Deathstroke also threw a grenade near the already deceased Ra’s al Ghul, whose corpse crumbled under the gaze of a helpless Damian.
While Talia, daughter of Ra, swears revenge on Deathstroke, the issue ends with the revelation that Slade Wilson was actually unaware of the attackand that the perpetrator of the murder is a fraud.
The Shadow War Crossover, made by screenwriter Joshua Williamson, will unfold across Batman, Robin and Deathstroke Inc. over the course of three months.culminating in Shadow War: Omega #1 in June.
The next chapter of the crossover will be told in Batman #122 on April 5. Also, we already know that Shadow War will see the debut of one of Batman’s most dangerous villains in the Joker version.
