Who knew Eren’s dive would be one of the little surprises in Attack on Titan Season 4 Episode 19? After a bloody battle, the Jaeger brothers have finally managed to unleash the power of the founding giant.
Everything fans thought they knew Founder Ymiron the founding giant and also on hiking trails (i.e. the coordinate) It was wrong. All of this throws not only the audience, but also Eren into a comprehension loop.
That’s what it said for much of the first series Eren Jaeger owned the coordinate. People like Reiner Braun seemed to know what it meant, but Eren and the audience were left in the dark. The location where the Jaeger brothers are now is known as “the coordinate where the paths converge‘, indicating that for the sake of simplicity, paths and coordinates are interchangeable terms for the same location. A vast desert inhabited only by Ymir, the foundress, and the original giant for whom Ymir’s subjects are named.
Men of royal blood travel the paths to harness the power of the primordial giant. An infinite number of years can pass in a single moment. In fact, Ymir seems to spend years sculpting the bodies of giants in the sand, while a giant’s possessor summons the power of the Nine in a matter of split seconds. In the Paths, Ymir heals Zeke’s wounds in Attack On Titan 4×17. A person of royal blood can summon anything they want within the paths, such as the chains Zeke used to his advantage to fool Eren.
Unexpectedly, Zeke reveals that despite her divine power, Ymir is a slave with no will of her own. Ymir exists only to serve those of royal blood and considers every member of that lineage to be their master. The power for which Eren and Zeke betrayed and killed companions they can never truly possess, they must command Ymir to execute on their behalf.
The most shocking revelation of this episode is this Eren’s possession of the Great Giant brought him nothing. The primordial giant has very little power, which would explain how Grisha Jaeger managed to steal him from the Reiss family so easily. The only thing the Great Giant can do is push its owner into the paths. As this episode proved being within the paths means nothing if the user is not of royal blood. The founding giant is little more than a key.
While the founding giant has been inherited within the Reiss family of Paradis Island over the years, whoever owned it was bound by King Fritz’s vow of renunciation of war. However, this vow seems to refer specifically to the founding giant, not someone of royal blood. Now that Zeke has reached the paths without owning the Founder Giant, he is not bound by the will of Fritz and has revoked the vow. The only rule regarding the proto-giant that protected the world has been broken and, at least for now, the fate of the whole world lies in the uncertain hands of Zeke Jaeger.
