The headline of the twenty-sixth volume of compilation of the manga, written and illustrated by Satoru Noda, Golden Kamuy, confirmed that the literary franchise has exceeded 16 million accumulated copies in circulation. The count also includes digital copies sold in the Japanese market.
Noda started publishing the manga through the magazine Weekly young jump from the publisher Shueisha since August 2014. The publisher published the twenty-fourth anthology in December 2020, followed by the twenty-fifth on March 18 in Japan.
The work inspired a three-season anime adaptation that to date includes thirty-six episodes and four OVAs, produced by Geno Studio Headed by Hitoshi Nanba and scripts written by Noboru Takagi. The three seasons, each with twelve episodes, premiered in Japan in April 2018, October 2018 and October 2020.
Summary of Golden Kamuy
In the early 1900s, Saichi Sugimoto searched relentlessly for gold in Hokkaido after the Russo-Japanese War. The former soldier, nicknamed “Sugimoto the Immortal” for his death-defying actions in combat, is looking for happiness to fulfill a promise he made to his best friend before his death: to support his family, especially his widow, who have to be treated abroad for their poor eyesight. One day a drunk boy tells Sugimoto the story of a man who murdered an Ainu group and stole a fortune in gold. Before the police arrested him, he hid the gold somewhere in Hokkaido. The only clue to his whereabouts is the encrypted map he tattooed on the corpses of his cellmates in order to receive a share of the treasure in case they manage to escape and find it.
Sugimoto doesn’t think much about the story until he discovers the drunk’s corpse with the same tattoos that are described in the story. But before he can collect his thoughts, Sugimoto approaches a grizzly bear who is the man’s killer, determined to finish his meal. He is rescued by a young Ainu named Asirpa, whose father turned out to be one of the Ainu killed. With Asirpa’s hunting skills and Sugimoto’s instincts for survival, the two agree to join forces and find the hidden treasure: one to retrieve what was rightful from their village and the other to grant the dying wish of their friend.
