Rei Ayanami is a special character and known to anyone who has seen the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise, though its popularity extends well beyond the limits of Hideaki Anno’s masterful work. Today he is a fundamental figure in the world of Japanese animation and for this reason he is very present on the net, protagonist of theories and much more.
After the Evangelion story comes to an end with the fourth and final film in the Rebuild saga, it can be said that Hideaki showed Anno all possible versions of Rei Ayanami. In the first series, we see her in the iconic white plug suit, useful for driving the giant Evangelion unit-00 mecha, but also in a student version with a blue and white uniform. There’s one in Rebuild of Evangelion too Rei Ayanami in black overalls.
All three versions were put together by the Japanese cosplayer Chachamaru who worked really hard and was born many versions of Rei Ayanami in this triple cosplay can be found in the various posts below. It starts with Rei in a black plug suit, goes over to the white one, who doesn’t miss Longinus’s lance, and finally Rei, a student. What’s the best version?
Instead, Yush Rei simply turned Ayanami into a schoolgirl in an enigmatic cosplay, while Nekoneko decided to pay homage to the version of Evangelion with a battle-ready Rei in a black suit.
