The return of bleaching The Millennial War saga anime brought Tite Kubo’s work back into the limelight, prompting the curious to approach Ichigo’s story for the first time. An interest that, however, given the popularity of the series, has raised many questions, and among the most common are: What is the Bankai?
In the vast universe of Bleach inhabited by different species, the Shinigami or Death Gods are responsible for freeing the Hollows and they can only do so thanks to their weapons: the Zanpakuto. These katanas are actually linked to the power and soul of the user, an aspect that makes them unique, and they can take different forms based on the depth of relationship established with the particular shinigami.
The first two are here sealed versionin which they appear as simple katanas, and the so-called Shikai, or initial release that gives forms and abilities to swords that vary depending on the user. In order to activate it, the shinigami must know the name of their zanpakuto’s spirit and be able to communicate with and create synergy with it.
That Bankai, or final release, is the second and final evolutionary stage of a zanpakuto, and it only happens if the Shinigami manages to summon and dominate the spirit of Zanpakuto. It is in every way the highest power a shinigami can attain through his weapon and requires years of training to be used efficiently and thus to achieve an excellent level of mastery.
The form and powers of the Bankai also vary depending on the user, but the final version also has weaknesses. Unlike the Shikai, when a Bankai is destroyed it cannot regenerate and the only way to get it back is to ask Oetsu Nimaiya, creator of Zanpakutoto forge it from scratch like Ichigo Kurosaki does himself.
Finally, we leave you with our ranking of the 10 most spectacular Bankai of the series.
