So you’ve spent a lifetime on the front lines. The dust of battlefields is your second skin. Your idea of a peaceful retirement? Probably a quiet cottage, a good book, maybe a well-earned rest. Not, typically, being handed a vacant lot the size of a small country and told to “get on with it.”
That’s the neatly paradoxical premise of The Frontier Lord Begins with Zero Subjects — which just unveiled its second official trailer and locked in a July 10 premiere.
Life has a certain sense of humour, doesn’t it?
Production & Music
The production is in the hands of studio42, directed by Kenichi Imaizumi — the man who steered Kingdom through its acclaimed middle seasons (seasons 3 through 6). The project looks to be leaning into the calm chaos of its concept.
- Scripts: Kunihiko Okada
- Character designs: Keiichi Tsuboyama
- Opening theme:
Wonder
by CROWN HEAD (Japanese-Korean pop-rock band) - Ending theme:
Hoshi Furu Yoru no Yakusoku
by Kaya
The new trailer offers a first listen to the opening, while the ending promises a beautiful, atmospheric close to each episode.
A Cast That Can Carry a Scene With a Sigh
The announcement came with five major cast additions. These are performers who can convey the bewildered dignity of a man who knows siege tactics but not soil pH levels — or the quiet guidance of a mysterious, horned girl who sees potential where others see only empty scrubland.
- Yoko Hikasa as Diane — famous for Mio Akiyama in K-ON! and Rias Gremory in High School DxD
- Nao Toyama as Eima — recognized for Chitoge Kirisaki in Nisekoi and Yui Yuigahama in Oregairu
- Jun Fukuyama as Eldan — the legendary voice of Lelouch Lamperouge in Code Geass and Koro-sensei in Assassination Classroom
- Miku Ito as Senai — beloved for Miku Nakano in The Quintessential Quintuplets
- Rikuya Yasuda as Francis — previously lent his talent as Benedict in Violet Evergarden
This isn’t just fan service; it’s a strategic investment in voices that sell.
From Web Novel to Global Franchise
The story began in 2018 as a web novel by Fuurou on the portal Shōsetsuka ni Naro. The publisher Earth Star Novel saw its potential and began releasing printed volumes with illustrations by Kinta.
Thanks to great reception and a successful manga adaptation drawn by Yumbo, the work now boasts over two million copies in circulation globally — a strong exponent of everyday fantasy stories. Think of it as Stardew Valley meets Vinland Saga, if Thorfinn decided to focus on irrigation systems instead of vengeance.
The Story: Build From Absolutely Nothing
The plot centres on Dias, a formidable warrior who finally returns home after entire decades fighting on bloody battlefronts. The king rewards his sacrifice by granting him his own territory to rule as a feudal lord.
However, the joy is short-lived. The promised land is a completely empty plain stretching as far as the eye can see, with an initial population of exactly zero inhabitants.
Having only known the art of war his entire life, Dias is at a complete loss. Then a mysterious girl with horns named Alna appears — and shows him these desolate lands hide far more possibilities than anyone could imagine at first glance.
The Question It Poses
When every tool you have is designed for one context, how do you even begin to assess the resources of a new, seemingly barren one?
Does true leadership lie in imposing order on familiar chaos — or in cultivating it from apparent emptiness?
And what happens to an expert when their entire field of expertise suddenly… expires?
