Since the first chapter Hajime Isayama has made one thing clear: in The attack of the Giants death will always be present. So over the past ten years of publication we have seen even brutal deaths that have helped create the current situation.
With chapter 129, The Attack of the Giants presented two other important deaths with the characters in question who until recently were on diametrically opposed fronts. The two are Marley’s general, Theo Magath, and the former instructor of the Eldia soldier corps, Keith Shadis. The second is one of the first figures appeared in the series while the first is an exponent of Marley and therefore introduced only in the last narrative arc of The Attack of the Giants.
Magath has been at the center of some considerations in the last chapters and, after also attacking his new allies, he understood what the situation was for both and decided to take on his responsibilities by acting as a rearguard. Shadis is simultaneously the symbol of the old generation of Eldia who sent many people to slaughter in an attempt to understand the origin of the giants.
The duo manages to help the boys who have just got on the ship to head towards the continent. This has been done detonating one of the ships that remained docked at the pier, so as to prevent any pursuit by the Jaeger faction that is blindly following Eren. The duo’s sacrifice now falls on the shoulders of the new generation of soldiers who will have to do everything to stop Eren and save the world. We will see the first effects of this choice in The Attack of the Giants 130 coming in three weeks.
