Few characters have managed to win a place in the hearts of readers like the likeable Spider-Man from the neighborhood. For many, Peter Parker is almost a family friend. However, we know pretty much everything about him… Or not? In fact, we missed something: how old is Spider-Man in the Marvel Comics?
Spider-Man made his debut in Amazing Fantasy 15, which was released in 1962. In this edition a 15-year-old Peter Parker is bitten by the spider radioactive, which gives him the strength. If Peter was 15 in 1962, it means that today, in 2021, a 74-year-old Spider-Man is happily circling between the skyscrapers of Manhattan: problem solved.
Obviously this is not the case. To keep his superheroes young and fresh Marvel uses a narrative gimmick called Sliding Timescale: Basically, everything that Marvel releases weekly happens within the fictional universe at the same time as it is released in the real world. However, time flows differently in the Marvel Universe than in the real world, and actual events cited need to be updated often through retcon. For this reason, Tony Stark was originally kidnapped using the example of Iron Man’s origins during the Vietnam War, but when his origins are mentioned in the latest comics it is about the war in Afghanistan.
First a year in the real world it was equivalent to a year in the Marvel world. So Peter graduated, started college, and started his life as a teenager. Slowly, however, time began to lengthen in the Marvel world. On the whole, we can say that it’s currently a year in the Marvel Universe equates to three or four years in the real world.
In 1995, during the infamous Clone saga, Peter Parker discussed the possibility of having a child safely with MJ with Hank McCoy, the X-Man Beast. The conversation arose fromis approaching Peter’s thirtieth birthday.
In the 2000s, Peter Parker quit his precarious photographer job for the Daily Bugle to find a more stable teaching job at Midtown High, the school Peter attended in his teens. In this story cycle It is implied that Spider-Man is in his thirties.
Everything changes with the story One More Day (2008), the most important retcon in Spider-Man history. The marriage between Peter and Mary Jane is broken off, the whole world forgets Spider-Man’s true identity and suddenly Peter Parker wakes up visibly rejuvenated in his bedroom with Aunt May.
Amazing Spider-Man (vol. 3) # 1, published in 2014, specifically states that 13 years have passed since the spider bite. Remember that in Amazing Fantasy 15, Peter Parker was 15 years old, so it’s clear that Peter Parker was 28 years old in 2014. For the sliding timescale mechanism, we can say that in comics today, Peter Parker is between 28 and 30 years old.
And what about the movies? In other articles we have tried to calculate the age of Maguire’s Spider Man, should he actually appear in No Way Home, as well as the age of Garfield and Holland’s Spider Man.
