With the release of the second trailer of Spider Man No Way Home, there is no longer any doubt: the new Spider-Man adventure in the cinema will see the presence of the multiverse. By the time the film is released, we’ve selected five Spider-Man comics that tell the adventures of Peter Parker, who battles alternate universes.
Spider-Man 2099 meets Spider-Man
Among the very first stories Spider-Man walked across the multiverse was Spider-Man 2099 Meets Spider-Man, a one-shot by Peter David and Rick Leonardi released in 1995. This crossover story looks obvious the first meeting between Peter Parker and Miguel O’Hara, Spider-Man of the year 2099. Throughout the story, before the two characters team up, Peter and Miguel swap places over time. Thanks to his knowledge of future events, Miguel manages to prevent the end of the Age of Heroes, turn his future into an alternate universe to all effects.
Spider men
Released in 2012, Spider-Men is the story of the first meeting between Peter Parker from the main Marvel universe and Miles Morales from the Ultimate universe. Written by Brian Michael Bendis and illustrated by Sara Pichelli (the creators of Miles Morales), this story sees Peter Parker land and discover it almost by accident in the Ultimate Universe its original counterpart from this universe was killed by Green Goblin. It’s a compelling story in which Peter gets to know alternate versions of Aunt May and Gwen Stacy.
Spider verse
The quintessential history of the spider multiverse. Spiderverse, written by Dan Slot and Christos Gage and designed by Olivier Coipel and Giuseppe Camuncoli, is the story set between 2014 and 2015 all existing alternate versions of Spider-Man combined: from Spider-Man Noir to Superior Spider-Man, through the Spider-Man of the Japanese television series, and even through the various animated iterations of Spider-Man. Ragnoverso has its roots in the career of JM Straczynski, who introduced the characters of Ezekiel and Morlun into the lore of Spider-Man in the 2000s, as well as totemic beings like The Other.
Secret wars
While this isn’t exactly a Spider-Man story, it is Secret Wars represents an important step in the history of Spider-Manlike the entire Marvel universe. In Secret Wars, the multiverse implodes and creates Battleworld, an empire that unites the few alternate universes that survived the raids, true collisions between neighboring universes. Secret Wars represents closer than ever to a restart in the Marvel Comics: At the end of the story, a completely renewed main Marvel universe, Terra Prime, is created, which has some differences from the previous one. One of the most important is certainly the transition from Miles Morales from the no longer existing Ultimate Universe to Terra Prime.
Spidergeddon
Ragnoverso’s sequel Spidergeddon, released in 2018, ends the fight between the Spider-Men and the Heirs, the totemic race of vampires that Morlun is a part of. Written by Christos Gage and illustrated by Jorge Molina, Spidergeddon features all of Ragnoverso’s main characters, including some new additions such as Norman Osborn, Spider-Man of Earth-44145. Although Spidergeddon will bring the story that began in Ragnoverso to its final conclusion, there are opportunities for new potential crises that they could force all of the Spider-Men to reunite.
If we see more Spider-Men banding together in the cinema, we’ll soon find out: the wait for Spider-Man No Way Home is almost over. Although not yet released, the film already seems to be a success: No Way Home’s pre-sale is at a record breaking point.
