It was 1993 when animation studio Toon Makers in the United States of America signed a deal with Renaissance Atlantic Entertainment to produce a project based on Sailor Moon by Naoko Takeuchi, which was already a huge hit in Japan. A collaboration that resulted in the Saban Moon series.
The title also derives from the name of the Producer Haim Saban, then known for the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series. Intending to create a fully Western version of the Star Guardian adventures, the writers decided to make episodes in which The animated scenes alternated with live action sectionsa fairly common practice in those years to repropose Sentai and Super Sentai series in star territory.
Thanks to careful research at the Washington Library of Congress, YouTuber Ray Mona was able to pull up the opening theme and full first episode of Saban Moon, which you can see in the news above. There in just ten minutes pilot episode introduces viewers to the magical world of Saban Moon, and the attention paid to dividing the minutes between animated and live-action sections is immediately apparent.
