In the world of entertainment, there may be times when you come across works that are too similar to others, perhaps earlier, or even belonging to a different medium. Often these similarities lead to plagiarism, as the late master Satoshi Kon pointed out in a found interview Perfect Blue and a famous and award-winning Hollywood film.
Influence is ever-present in any artistic field, as is the importance of sources of inspiration, but sometimes the creators or self-proclaimed go too far. After the death of Satoshi KonOne of the most important directors in the history of Japanese animation, bringing films like Paprika, Tokyo Godfathers and Perfect Blue to the entertainment world, fans of his work have noticed some similarities to Darren Aronofsky’s films.
Aronofsky He has never hidden his passion for Japanese cinema, let alone the influences Akira Kurosawa, Shin’ya Tsukamoto and Kon himself had on his work. However, some of the scenes featured in Requiem for a Dream were perceived by Kon himself as plagiarism rather than tribute. In one of Kon’s talks in 2007and recently discovered, the Japanese director claimed that the scene in which Marion, played by Jennifer Connely, sits in the bathtub bore many similarities to a sequence in his Perfect Blue.
“He’s probably a big fan of the film and I think I’ll talk to him when he comes over for Requiem for a Dream‘ Kon began, then talked about asking Aronofsky for an explanation. In answer, that’s it the techniques used to resume that momentvery similar to what was seen in Kon’s feature film were actually a tribute to his work.
From the interview excerpt at the bottom of the page you can see how Kon was adamantly opposed to repurposing his work in this way. What do you think of this unique story about Perfect Blue?
