The world of ONE PIECE it is huge and includes many organizations. On one side are the world government and the navy, on the other the army of revolutionaries. In the middle there are instead many small groups, very often pirates, but there is no shortage of those who set up very special organizations, for example the MADS.
That MADS is very rarely mentioned in ONE PIECE but its importance is high. The first mention was in chapter 840 of the manga, corresponding to episode 802 of the anime, by the mouth of Yonji Vinsmoke. The name could be an acronym, but also a reference to “Mad Scientists”, the mad scientists who were part of it.
In fact, this organization outside of government control had some of ONE PIECE’s most brilliant minds in its ranks: Vegapunk, Vinsmoke Judge, Caesar Clown and Queen. It is not known if other scientists collaborated on the project, which had very dangerous goals. The Navy then stepped in to destroy the group, forcing Vegapunk to work for the world government.
With the mysteries of Vegapunk on the way, it’s possible that Oda will go into more detail and explain What is MADS and what is its history?, also to better outline the personality and past of Egghead’s brilliant scientist. And who knows, this might not also help unravel the mystery of the devil fruit.
