Eiichiro Oda introduced numerous transformations for his protagonist ONE PIECE, required power-ups to allow the Mugiwara Captain to face increasingly difficult opponents. But what is actually the most energy-efficient form of Luffy?
The Gear Fifth is the protagonist of the cover of Volume 103, a shape to which Oda wanted to devote as much space as possible for the new Tankobon. What is interesting, however, is that the author did not originally intend to exceed ONE PIECE’s 100 volumes, a symptom of the Sensei’s inability to cope with the enormous amount of information over time.
However, one user on Reddit attempted to discuss the reasons why he thought that was the case Gear Fifth is Luffy’s most energy efficient form. According to his theory, the ability of the protagonist’s final power-up, the awakening of the gom-gom fruit, would be none other than his true transformation, as it is rooted in the nature of his devil fruit. From Gear Second to Gear Fourth, on the other hand, these would be a kind of “false transformations”of the tricks Luffy used to compromise body and ability to achieve certain results, which is why he suffered severe consequences after using it.
Someone has remarked that the Mugiawa’s captain might actually have paid the price by spending several weeks unconscious in bed, but in many cases the protagonist was forced into a long rest after the battle. All without remembering that before waking up, his heart was subjected to an unprecedented exertion. And you instead, what do you think of this hypothesis?
