Neal Adams passed away on April 28, 2022, one of the most influential animators in the history of American comics. The author, famous for his works about Batman, Green Lantern, but also X-Men and Avengers, died in New York of complications from sepsis.
Adams, 80, is in charge along with screenwriter Dennis O’Neil. the birth of the serious and dark Batman we know today. His run on the character in the ’70s transformed Bruce Wayne’s alter ego from a camp speck (borrowed from Adam West’s interpretation of the ’60s Batman series) into the tormented and nocturnal Dark Knight, who is still explored on paper .
Neal Adams is also the creator of the Green Lantern John Stewart, one of the first black superheroes in American comics. Adams was very fond of current issues such as racism, and he was the designer of Green Lantern #87 (1971), the book where John Stewart decides to stop wearing a mask because as a black man he has nothing to hide.
As for his work in Marvel, Adams was one of the illustrators of the Kree-Skrull Warthe Avengers saga that redefined the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe and is still considered one of the cornerstones of the House of Ideas story.
Recently, Neal Adams has been directing a series about Ra’s al Ghul, a character he helped create, alongside the Fantastic Four: Antithesis miniseries based on the lyrics by Mark Waid.
