The Japanese animation community lost one of its quiet builders this week. Kinema Citrus confirmed that Satoshi Mori—founder of the studio Gift-o’-Animation—died on after a long illness. He was sixty-eight.
His family thanked fans and colleagues for their support across his decades of work.
A Builder, Not Just a Boss
Mori didn’t stay behind a desk. He founded Gift-o’-Animation in and jumped straight into creative work—serving as producer, director, and chief director.
His oversight included:
- Multiple Cardfight!! Vanguard series
- Both seasons of overDress
- The will+Dress trilogy
The Work That Speaks
Beyond the card-game franchise, Mori’s touch appears in some of modern anime’s most visually ambitious projects. You’ll spot his direction in episodes of Made in Abyss and The Rising of the Shield Hero.
His real strength? Mechanical animation. He served as mecha animation director for the film Eureka Seven: good night, sleep tight, young lovers, with work on Star Driver, Sacred Seven, and the OVA Mobile Suit Gundam UC.
What Remains
Colleagues called him a mentor—someone who understood that animation succeeds through collective craft, not ego. The family asks that those wishing to honor him consider supporting the artists and studios he championed.
The measure of a creative life isn’t awards or headlines. It’s the work left behind. Which of Mori’s projects first showed you his craft—and what moment stays with you?
