The animated adaptation of Mistress Kanan is Devilishly Easy—or Kanan-sama wa Akumade Choroi if you prefer the original Japanese tongue-twister—dropped its main trailer this week alongside a fresh promotional poster. The footage confirmed an April 4 premiere, which gives us roughly three weeks to prepare for whatever gloriously awkward chaos awaits.

Music and Production

Musically, things look promising. Rock outfit Faulieu handles opening duties with Hatsukoi Moment, whilst VTuber collective Asagiri Koko closes each episode with Pop, Snack, Junk na HUNNY. The titles alone tell you everything about the tonal gear-shifts in store.

Studio Kai shoulders production, with Yasushi Muroya—whose credits include contributions to BLUELOCK and Fairy Tail—taking the director’s chair. Hisashi Isogawa assists, Rintaro Ikeda oversees scripts, and Akari Minagawa adapts character designs. A solid crew, on paper at least.

Mangaka nonco launched the series in Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine back in June 2022. Twelve compiled volumes already exist in Japan as of mid-January. Evidently, readers responded enthusiastically to the blend of supernatural mischief and romantic ineptitude.

What elevates this beyond standard genre fare is the central contradiction: a creature built for domination finds herself completely out of her depth in the one arena she never studied—genuine emotional connection. The comedy writes itself, yet something almost philosophical lurks underneath. How do you maintain authority when vulnerability keeps finding the cracks?
