Kyoto Animation has revealed plans for a new feature film in the “Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid” franchise. Titled “Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon: A Lonely Dragon Wants to be Loved,” the movie is set to premiere in Japan in 2025.
The announcement, made during a special broadcast, confirms that the film will be a canonical adaptation of the popular “Kanna Kamui Arc,” bringing the beloved characters to the big screen for the first time.

Key members of the production team and voice cast shared their excitement about the unexpected project:

Mutsumi Tamura, voice of Kobayashi, expressed surprise at the announcement, saying, “When I saw the teaser visual, I thought it had a very serious atmosphere! Isn’t it just the usual warm daily routine? Is Kobayashi-san saying goodbye?”
Yuuki Kuwahara, who voices Tohru, shared her enthusiasm: “The intense action scenes, the subtle changes in the characters’ expressions… Maid Dragon is a work that, no matter how many times you see it, always offers new discoveries.”

Franchise Background
The “Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid” manga, created by Cool-kyou Shinja, has been running in Futabasha’s Monthly Action magazine since May 2013. The anime adaptation, produced by Kyoto Animation, currently consists of 25 episodes across two seasons, along with various OVAs.
The series follows Kobayashi, a programmer who unexpectedly becomes the caretaker of Tohru, a dragon who can transform into a human maid. The story blends slice-of-life comedy with fantasy elements, exploring the relationships between humans and mythical creatures.
Future Implications
This announcement marks a significant development for the franchise, potentially opening doors for more anime properties to transition to feature-length productions. The focus on Kanna’s story promises to delve deeper into the young dragon’s background and relationships, potentially expanding the series’ lore.
As we eagerly await more details, questions arise about how the movie will balance the series’ signature humor with the more serious tone hinted at in the teaser visuals. The 2025 release date gives Kyoto Animation ample time to craft a memorable cinematic experience for long-time fans and newcomers alike.
