It struck midnight a few hours ago in Japan and, like every July 31st, the Internet came together to wish a great Japanese artist a happy birthday. Junji ito, Master of horror and manga writer of the caliber of Uzumaki, Tomie and Gyo, just turned 58, and of course we join the choir and wish them all the best.
Junji Ito was born on July 31, 1963 in Sakashita, Gifu Prefecture, Japan. He loved Japanese literature from an early age and began reading Kazuo Umezu’s stories on the advice of his two sisters. After studying dentistry, he began working in a dental practice until, in 1984, he realized that his true calling was writing.
today Junji Ito is nicknamed “Master of Horror”, Title given to him by fans for the appalling content of his works. The mangaka has received dozens of awards in Japan and has become very well known in the West over the past decade, largely thanks to the adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. A few days ago, the author made himself an early birthday present and won a double Eisner Award in the 2021 edition.
