Hayao Miyazaki, Co-founder of the award-winning Studio Ghibli and one of the most visionary and talented directors in the animation world, will be the first to receive a temporary exhibition at the Academy Awards Museum with material that traces his entire life and extraordinary career.
The opening of the Oscar Museum was initially for 2020, but was postponed several times due to the spread of the virus. Despite those months, however, the academy managed to set an exact date for the inauguration, and during the Anime Expo, the promoter and Museum curator Jessica Niebel, discussed the choices made, including the decision to dedicate the first exhibition to Miyazaki.
“There are so many reasons that I can’t even count them. First, he’s a great director. It’s known all over the world, and we’re a museum for international films, so we wanted to start with productions that are known around the world. “ Here’s how Niebel began before explaining the usefulness of working directly with Studio Ghibli: “Nobody in North America has ever shown such an achievement. We are very proud, happy and We’re honored that Studio Ghibli has agreed to work together and help us develop it. “
Access to the original materials, the selection of which was overseen by Miyazaki himself, helped Niebel and J. Raul Guzman, deputy curator of the exhibition, to find out which works stand out from others and, most importantly, enabled them to develop solid relationships with key figures at Studio Ghibli.
The special exhibition dedicated to Hayao Miyazaki in the Academy Awards Museum is now opening its doors to the public from 09/30/2021, and promises to become one of the most important and richest exhibitions devoted to the master’s works.
Remember that Studio Ghibli presented a collection of prestigious timepieces and we leave you to the words of a studio animator about the meticulousness of Hayao Miyazaki’s work.
