On the official site of the new anime adaptation of the manga by Natsuki Takaya, fruit basket, a new promotional video for the feature film was released Fruit Basket: Prelude. The video previews the main theme song titled “Niji to Kite (rainbow and kite)” and interpreted by Ohashi trio, and retains the premiere scheduled for next February 18th in theaters in Japan.

This project will include the anime adaptation of the arc Kyouko to Katsuya no Monogatari (The story of Kyouko and Katsuya), which will focus on the story of Tohru’s parents, a part of the manga that was not adapted into the anime. The film will also feature new scenes, written by Takaya personally, that will narrate events following the anime’s story.

director Yoshihide Ibata revealed in the comments that this animation project was already decided in advance: «We are happy to finally announce the production. During the airing of the TV series, we had already decided to do a story about Kyouko and Katsuya, so I was so frustrated that I couldn’t say anything during the airing. In fact, in the TV series, we deliberately left Katsuya’s face out of the picture. I was relieved when a lot of people commented on the last episode and said, “So this happened! and we are relieved to receive comments of delight and surprise. The TV series was bound to be long, but this time we were able to take the time to develop it. It was fun, but it’s the end».x|

The final season aired during the Spring 2021 (April-June) season for a total of thirteen episodes, while the platform entertainment takes care of sales in the west. The 25-episode first season premiered in Japan in April 2019, followed by a 25-episode second season in April 2020.

Fruit basket synopsis

Tohru Honda has always been fascinated by the story of the Chinese zodiac, told to her by her loving mother as a child. However, a sudden family tragedy changes her life and the ensuing circumstances leave her alone. Tooru is now forced to live in a tent, but little does she know that her temporary home is on the Souma family’s private property. Bumping into his house one day, he meets Shigure, an older cousin of Souma, and Yuki, the “prince” of his school. Tohru explains that she lives nearby, but the Soumas finally discover her well-kept secret of being homeless when they see her walking back to her shop one night.

Things start to improve for Tohru when they kindly offer to take her in after learning of her situation. But soon after, she becomes involved in a fight between Yuki and her short-tempered cousin Kyou. When he tries to stop her, he learns that the Souma family has a well-kept secret: whenever they are hugged by a member of the opposite sex, they transform into the animals of the Chinese zodiac. With this new revelation, Tohru will discover that life with the Soumas is an unexpected adventure filled with laughter and romance.
