The series of Neon Genesis Evangelion is full of unforgettable and especially epic moments, like the battle of the sixth episode of the anime. On this occasion a prositonic rifle was fired, which required electricity from all over Japan. But would it be possible to obtain this energy in other ways? And at what price?
We’re talking about the amazing Battle between Shinji Ikari aboard the EVA-01 and the Angel Ramiel. In order to defeat an opponent of this caliber, the protagonist was forced to use a precision prositonic rifle. Firing from a great distance at Angel’s Absolute Terror Field with around 180 million kilowatts of electricity.
Fascinated by the question Takeshi Utsumi, a former member of the Fulbright program and vice president of the Technology Sector and Coordinator of the Global University System, calculated how much it would cost to accumulate such an amount of energy through the use of solar panels. The end result is the astronomical number of 90 trillion yen or around 695 million euros. In addition, Utsumi found that 1.3 billion standard-size solar panels would be needed.
