There are no more words to describe Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. Koyoharu Gotouge’s manga started on Weekly Shonen Jump in 2016 and received little attention, but slowly built its audience by causing a small explosion in 2018 that had made it one of Shueisha magazine’s most recognizable titles.
But in 2019 Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba really began to jeopardize all of the records the other manga had won over the years. The Ufotable anime was, in fact, fatal to sales, turning a series that sold just over 10 million copies into a bestseller that did exceeded 80 million within one yearAn achievement that even the holy monsters Dragon Ball, ONE PIECE and Slam Dunk hadn’t achieved.
Although it has now ended, the fever is showing no sign of stopping to the Japanese public. With the latest Oricon 2020 ranking, the company announced that Demon Slayer’s first volume had sold an additional 100,000 copies, bringing the total to 5,029,069. Hence the Demon Slayer 1 sales have broken the five million-copy wallThis makes the distance to the other titles even more miserable. It’s only a matter of time before another, if not all, of the volumes in the series hit this milestone.
And at this point, Demon Slayer will also be confirmed as a sales champion in 2021, although there are no new volumes in Japanese comics and newspaper kiosks.
