Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba has quickly become one of the most followed and discussed shonen in the vast manga panorama, as well as a real media phenomenon, reaching impressive numbers thanks to the anime and the film produced by the Ufotable studio. But where does this success come from?
Six years after Demon Slayer debuted, it’s widely believed that The simplicity of the plot is a weak point the work of Koyoharu Gotoge. In reality, the linearity of Tanjiro Kamado’s journey to humanize his sister Nezuko, the sole survivor of the family’s slaughter at the hands of a demon, may have been the real reason for the series’ immense popularity.
In fact, the author never seems to have been interested in building a complex world and defining most of the main elements in the first few chapters, and this allowed her to do so Focus on character development. Between increasingly dangerous adversaries and equally powerful allies, Tanjiro’s growth as a member of the Demon Slayer Corps was a series of similar events, mostly changing the setting and supporting characters.
It is therefore clear how The story revolves around the characters, their relationships, and is not based on a vast and calculated world building that many enthusiasts have instead attempted to define based on the little and sporadic information that actually surrounds the main story. However, this does not mean that the series has obvious moments of decline, the sequence of events, the continuous movement of the protagoniststhe frequent comic interludes and contact with various pillars create further interactions and situations that drive the whole story along.
Another aspect that Gotoge probably focused on is the comparison between what the characters are and what they can do, an example is Kyojuro Rengoku, who appeared briefly and in which he is mostly shown asleep, and still thanks to his character Hey done to almost unanimously conquered the hearts of the fans. What do you think about it? Would you have preferred a more developed storyline at the expense of character construction? As usual, please let us know in the comments section.
