Japanese animation is part of a sector that has been growing for years, an industry that gave excellent signals around the world in 2021. However, the previous year was the only one where the market suffered a slight decline after at least a decade of growth, mainly caused by Covid-19.
You read that right, but in 2020 the entire Japanese animation market was gone valued at 2.4 trillion yen. Of course, it depends on the exchange almost 19 billion euros with a decrease of around 680 million euros compared to 2019, when the industry reached its peak.
there Association of Japanese Animations, a group of 52 major manufacturing industries, announced 2020 market results to highlight the expansion of the overseas sector, surpassing the domestic sector for the first time in history. According to the data, the market outside Japan, including overseas distribution rights and merchandising, would have contributed over € 9.5 billion, outperforming, albeit slightly, that of the rising sun.
Hiromichi Masuda, Editor-in-Chief of the Anime Industry Report, stated: “Distribution services are going well, the negative impact of the Covid-19 pandemic is very small and new projects are gradually increasing. Japanese works are now on display overseas, and some companies are strategically thinking about content and business specifically for overseas markets.“
