Just when everyone thought Hideaki Anno had finished his life’s work—four Rebuild films, endless emotional wreckage, that final ending—here we go again.
Monday night in Yokohama. The Evangelion:30+ anniversary festival dropped something nobody predicted. A new Evangelion series is officially happening.
The Creative Team
Studio Khara partners with CloverWorks. But the names attached are what matter:
- Script and Supervision: Yoko Taro. The mind behind NieR:Automata. His thing? Making people question existence, choices, whether games can break your heart. Perfect fit for Eva.
- Direction: Kazuya Tsurumaki and Tōko Yatabe. Tsurumaki’s been around since the original ’95 run. Yatabe brings fresh eyes from her work on 3.0+1.0 and Chainsaw Man.
- Music: Keiichi Okabe. If you know the NieR soundtracks, you know. Melancholy. Grandeur. Emotional devastation, scored.
What Happened at Yokohama Arena
The festival ran February 21-23. Attendees saw a thirteen-minute Asuka short film, caught Yoko Takahashi live—yes, she sang the songs—and got a preview of something called Kabuki Symphony No. 9 Evangelion.
Traditional Japanese theatre and biomechanical nightmares. Because why not.
Then the announcement video played. Cello. Choirs. The crowd apparently lost their minds.
Working title suggests Next Genesis. No release date. No episode count. No clarity on whether this continues Rebuild or starts fresh.
Does the world need more Evangelion, or are we all just unable to let go?
