The universe of Pokemon it’s peppered with references to the real world, as well as absurdities that fans or those approaching the series for the first time have come to accept without question. However, several issues have surfaced over the years, and the official light novel has finally clarified a very relevant and debated detail.
In our society, it seems completely absurd to let a 10-year-old kid go on an adventure in a hostile world in search of Pokémon that could cause him serious injury. Because of this, fans of the series have often spoken about how unlikely it is for parents to let their child go in order to risk their lives, but in the official novel released in 1997, author Takeshi Shudo, screenwriter of the first three films in the series , has a fairly comprehensive and insightful explanation of it.
Divided into two parts, the official light novel titled Pocket Monsters: The Animation, is now one of the most coveted collectibles by anime fans and at the same time valuable for the much information it contains that is completely missing in the animated adaptation. Among them is a law that makes 10-year-olds legal adults.
This provision, referred to as the Elementary School Graduate Coming of Age Act, states the following: “In April after your tenth birthday, you can purchase a Pokémon License and carry Poké Balls with you to catch monsters. All adult rights are guaranteed…if you are caught stealing from a shop, the consequences are more serious than a simple rage from the shopkeeper, the police will arrest you”.
