There are very few manga creators who have really shaped the Japanese comic industry. With the immense production that Shueisha, Kodansha, Shogakukan, and other publishers offer each year, there are many manga that are forgotten. However, Akira Toriyama is still well knownthanks to his work on Dragon Ball.
Born April 5, 1955 in Nagoya, one of the largest cities in Japan, Akira Toriyama turns 67 today. He began drawing at a young age and, after a short work internship, devoted himself fully to his career as a mangaka, quickly coming into contact with the Shueisha publishing house. Weekly Shonen Jump, which was not yet at its peak and was suffering badly from the rivalry of much more established rivals Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine and Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday, devoted a lot of space to it.
Her career began with Dr. Slump, one of the magazine’s most successful comic manga. Four years of laughter and intensive publication, which then gave way to the biggest worldwide success a few years later: dragon ball. Millions of copies, many animes and films, special episodes and an infinite merch of Goku’s adventures that continues today thanks to Dragon Ball Super.
And the midquel still sees Toriyama at work behind the scenes, confirming that even at this age he can still come up with other ideas. Salute to one of the mangaka who changed the world of manga forever.
