Let’s take a step back and look at the facts. We’ve got a situation with the upcoming anime adaptation of Though I Am an Inept Villainess, and frankly, the schedule has just gone a bit pear-shaped.
The official website dropped a statement this Thursday that is going to require a bit of patience from all of us. The premiere, originally pencilled in for this April, has been pushed back to July 2026.
Why the Delay
Now, I know what you’re thinking. You’re ready to walk away. You’re thinking, That’s it, deal’s off.
But let’s not be hasty. According to the production committee, this shift is strictly down to delays in production progress. They’ve put their cards on the table, apologising for the inconvenience to fans who were geared up for the spring launch. It sounds like they want to get this right rather than rush a bad product out the door.
What We Know
Here is what we know for certain:
- The Studio: Doga Kobo is at the helm, with Mitsue Yamazaki (of Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun fame) directing.
- The Script: Yoshiko Nakamura is supervising the writing, with Ai Kikuchi handling character design.
- The Talent: The voice cast remains locked in. Manaka Iwami is set to play Kou Reirin—the butterfly of the imperial court—while Natsumi Kawaida will voice Shu Keigetsu, the rat.
The Story
For those unfamiliar with the source material, this is based on Satsuki Nakamura’s light novels, illustrated by YukiKana. The story is set in a kingdom with a distinct historical Chinese flavour. It follows Kou Reirin, a frail girl destined for empress-hood who ends up swapping bodies with her rival, Shu Keigetsu. Instead of panicking, Reirin uses her new, robust physique to navigate palace politics and dodge a potential execution.
It’s a classic case of playing the hand you’re dealt, even when the cards change unexpectedly.
How are we going to fill the time while we wait for the new release date?
