Although few works related to manga and anime can match the extraordinary world conceived by Kentaro Miura in Berserk, some fantasy series share various aspects and elements with Gatsu’s dramatic story. A particular parallel concerns Naofumi Iwatani, protagonist of The Rise of the Shield Hero.
Both protagonists harbor a deep anger, Gatsu for betraying Grifis and what he did to Caska while Naofumi suffered for the unjust and serious allegations. Likewise, both try to exploit this feeling in combat, often ending up relying on two extremely dangerous pieces of equipment: the Berserker Armor and the Shield of Wrath.
What the above weapons have in common is that they unleash the dark side of the protagonists, who see them as an ace up their sleeve that can be used in truly desperate and highly dangerous situations. While the power that comes with the shield and armor is impressive, at times anger and hatred can overwhelm you causing both Gatsu and Naofumi to lose control.
Playing as heroes facing a cruel and difficult fate, the two have often acted on impulse, confident in their abilities, and pouring out rage and sweat against a world that seems constantly angry at them. but Your best defense has proven to be almost deadly on some occasions.
The Shield of Wrath is hard the physical endurance of Naofumi, from whom a literal blood payment is demanded, and risks manipulating him by making him surrender to anger and act on instinct. While the Berserker’s armor allows the user to unlock impressive abilities, it doesn’t make them feel pain or fear, instead urging them to act in self-destructive and frantic ways.
